MILLETS DADDOJANAM| MILLETS CURD RICE| THAYIR SADAM

MILLETS DADDOJANAM

Daddojanam is Andhra style seasoned curd rice.  It is the ultimate comfort for many people including me; in fact my husband often teases calling the humble daddojanam our in-house specialty.  It will be very difficult to put in words how comforting it is to eat curd rice.  Pure bliss!!!
Daddojanam is commonly prepared with rice but for the ones who want eat a healthier version of it without feeling guilty can use various types of millets and broken wheat.  I used barnyard millets also known as samai or varai.  I have started cooking millet based recipes at least thrice a week and we love it.  You can also read Millets Lemon Rice which I posted very recently.

Preparation Time    :  10 mins
Cooking Time            :  22 mins
Serves                           :  3
Ingredients:
·         1/2 cup  barnyard millets
·         1 cup water
·         1 cup  fresh curd or curd
·         2 – 3 tbsp warm milk (optional)
·         Salt to taste
For Seasoning/Tadka:
·         1 tsp mustard seeds
·         1 tsp chana dal
·         1 tsp urad dal
·         2 – 3 green chilies, chopped
·         2 dried red chilies
·         Handful of curry leaves roughly chopped
·         A pinch of asafoetida/hing
·         1.5 tbsp oil
Method:

Wash the barnyard millets thoroughly and cook in one cup of water with lid covered.  Millets will be cooked perfectly in 10 -12 minutes on medium flame.  Switch off the flame and keep the lid closed for 5 minutes.

Now remove the lid; fluff up the cooked millets and keep aside to cool completely before making the daddojanam

Once the millets cool down completely add fresh curd/yogurt, warm milk and salt. Mix well.

For the seasoning heat oil; add mustard seeds and wait until they sputter.

Now add the chana dal & urad dal; fry till they turn golden brown.

Tip in the chopped green chilies, red chilies, asafoetida and curry leaves and fry for a couple of seconds.

Pour the seasoning/tadka over the daddojanam and mix well.

Enjoy healthy Millets Daddojanam with a pickle.
